How Post Houses have embraced Cloud Services
I work with lots of Post Houses and have seen first hand how they’ve had to adapt to the Covid restricted world. Post Houses (along with the rest of us) are having to work differently and Cloud Services during the last 8 months have really come into their own allowing effective home working in this industry. Necessity is the mother of invention after all.
Within the Post Houses I work with Cloud Services have been especially utilised in editing and VFX with whole teams seamlessly working from home. Post Houses have generally been deploying either cloud based virtual workstation or remote desktop infrastructure to run solutions such as Avid, Adobe and Maya to allow their artists to connect remotely to the facility’s edit suites.
Naturally security is paramount as well as making sure the customer is kept satisfied. Post Houses have developed their remote workflow to ensure it works for everyone. Here is an example of that Post Houses workflow and how they are ensuring it works for everyone involved:
1. Artists work remotely from home with either cloudbase virtual workstation or remote connectivity into a virtual desktop infrastructure or DI located at the office to carry out the VFX session or offline edit
2. These sessions are protected by a VPN which typically control remove creative workstations with something like Teradici or HP Remote Graphics Software (RGS)
3. Artists generally move the content to a workstation in the facility once the work has been carried out to be reviewed by the client and once this has been done the producer then creates a client session for the client to view the content. They may also use Teams or Zoom to support live conferencing and real-time feedback during the session for their clients to discuss changes to the content.
4. Clients will often be reviewing the content from a device of their choice while working at home and maybe via an Apple TV, consumer LED or OLED TV that generally represents the colour and content well at home
So what’s the future of home working for the Post industry? It’s hard to tell how long Covid restrictions will carry on for but in my opinion the industry has adapted so quickly I wouldn’t be surprised if many artists carry on working from home indefinitely. Time will tell!
